Unprecedented situation. The National Audiovisual Council received a notification for a show on Realitatea Plus in which the presenter was “recreated” with the help of artificial intelligence. Following this precedent, CNA wants to require television stations to mention throughout a program when it comes to images generated with artificial intelligence.
It happened on January 12 and it was about a column broadcast on the show “Open the world”, a column normally presented by the journalist Mihai Belu and entitled “On public money”.
In that edition, however, what appeared to be the person of Mihai Belu (very realistically made) announced that all that is seen are images generated by artificial intelligence. “Hello and well, I found you at a premiere show in Romania. For the first time in the history of television, the images are generated by artificial intelligence”, said the “director”.
Even so, the show in question was complained to CNA on the grounds that viewers are being misled because no warnings were mentioned during the column.
The audiovisual forum analyzed the complaint and watched the images, and later they interviewed the director, who explained to them that the show was made with his consent.
Mihai Belu intervened in the public meeting
“I had an operation and I couldn’t appear in person because I had a cut on my face. And anyway, I said it’s time to sound the alarm about artificial intelligence and its use. And it is better to fire the signal in a controlled way so that the world can see how well the artificial intelligence can copy.
I say that the experiment was successful. We live in a new era to which we must adapt. So I did this experiment and forced by circumstances but also to be the first. The whole experiment was also well received by the press.”
The CNA did not consider that there were any violations of the legislation, but the president Monica Gubernat emphasized that considering this precedent, it must be taken into account when amending the Audiovisual Code, the secondary legislation of the CNA. The Government proposed that in the case of this type of images, it should be mentioned throughout the broadcast that they are generated with the help of artificial intelligence programs.
“Clearly it is a precedent. We must be careful about the modification of the Code as the shows that are made with artificial intelligence, this must be written throughout the show as it happens with online materials.”
