Eleven people were injured on Thursday, four of them seriously, after a plane chartered by Air Senegal skidded off the runway during takeoff. The incident led to the closure of the airport near Dakar, the airport operator announced, reports AFP and Reuters.
The plane chartered from the private company Transair was to go to Bamako. It “went off the runway during the take-off phase, on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at around 01.00”, an incident that resulted in “eleven injuries, including four seriously” among the 78 passengers, it is mentioned in a press release of the airport operator, according to Agerpres.
Blaise Diagne Airport announced that an investigation had been launched to determine the cause of the crash, which occurred around 0100 GMT as the Transair Boeing 737-300 was preparing to take off for Mali.
The airport also mentions that it has triggered the emergency protocols to evacuate the passengers: “For the moment, the airport is closed… It is anticipated that the airport will be reopened in the next few hours”, added the cited source.
