Tomasz Szmydt, a judge at an Administrative Court in Warsaw, requested asylum in Belarus on Monday, saying he acted in protest against Poland’s policy towards Russia and Belarus, Reuters notes.

Poland, which opposes the Russian invasion of Ukraine, claims it has become a major target of Russian spies. It accuses Moscow and its ally, Belarus, of trying to destabilize it.

Prosecutors are looking into whether Szmydt spied against Poland, given the information he had access to as a judge, a spokesman for the Polish Prosecutor’s Office said.

Judge Szmydt was to rule next month on some cases regarding the “issuance of security clearances for information on secrets of NATO and the European Union”, reports Reuters.

For its part, the Polish Internal Security Agency said it was verifying the extent of the confidential information to which Szmydt had access.
