The victim, a man in his 20s, was discovered with a nail embedded in each hand shortly after midnight. Two pickup trucks, one belonging to the victim, were found burning in a nearby parking lot.
Police said the attack was “sinister” and that there was no justification for such violence. Police are investigating the possibility of a paramilitary attack, given graffiti found on public toilets in the area.
It happened in Bushmills, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said the man has life-changing injuries but will survive.

“We live in a democratic society where there is no justification for such a thing. Those responsible brutalize their own communities and control others through intimidation and violence,” the police said.

On the BBC, Deputy Chief Constable Bobby Singleton said it was a “truly shocking incident” and the local community was in shock.
He added that although the incident happened in a residential area, there are also vacation rentals and it was a busy holiday weekend.
