President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that Ukraine will not be able to become a member of NATO until it wins the war against Russia.
On Monday, the Ukrainian president met with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. Zelensky spoke about the timetable for Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
“I think we will join NATO only after our victory. I don’t think NATO will accept us while the war continues. For some NATO members it is risky, and for some, there is simply skepticism because of it,” Zelenskiy said in a video posted on Telegram, according to pravda.ua.
“The matter [aderării la] NATO, as the Secretary General rightly stated, is a matter of majority. And most of it is a political issue. In order for Ukraine to be politically accepted in the Alliance, we must win,” Zelensky continued.
When it comes to Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance, Zelensky believes that “no one will raise” questions about compatibility with NATO and the level of the Ukrainian military.
The president believes that the fact that Ukraine was not a member of NATO is one of the reasons for the current war.
“There was skepticism from some members many years ago, and Russia has cooperated very closely with our current partners, engaging in dialogue with them. [Rusia] he did everything he could to prevent Ukraine from joining not only NATO but also the EU. The goal was to prevent the development of Ukraine and keep it under Russian influence,” Zelenskiy emphasized.
In a speech to the Ukrainian Parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that he cannot predict when Ukraine will become a member of NATO.
In his speech, Stoltenberg also expressed his respect for the Ukrainian soldiers. Earlier, Stoltenberg met with President Zelenski. Among other things, they discussed the Secretary General’s idea to create a special NATO fund of 100 billion euros to support Ukraine.
