Former US President Donald Trump was sentenced on Tuesday to pay a $9,000 fine for contempt of the court that is trying him in the Stormy Daniels trial, after violating the ban on verbally attacking witnesses and jurors in this trial, reports AFP according to Agerpres.
The same court threatened him with “imprisonment” in case of a relapse. The judge delivered the ruling in front of Trump at the opening of the hearing on Tuesday morning, three weeks after the trial began.
The former republican president, who aspires to a new mandate this year, was thus sentenced to one thousand dollars for each violation of the imposed ban, the court finding nine such violations.
Donald Trump “is warned that the Court will not tolerate the continuation of deliberate violations of its orders and that, if necessary and appropriate, it will impose a measure of incarceration”, indicated the judge leading the trial, Juan Merchan.
Trump is accused in the case of falsifying accounting records of the Trump Organization to cover up a $130,000 payment he allegedly made to former porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election to keep her quiet about a relationship that they would have had in 2006.
Before the opening of the trial, the judge forbade the former president to publicly attack witnesses and jurors, which he does regularly on his social network Truth Social, attacks considered by the court as possible acts of intimidation. Trump thus addressed virulent invectives to Stormy Daniels and his former lawyer Michael Cohen, who has now become one of his bitter enemies and a key prosecution witness in this process.
Trump is indicted in four cases and has already been sentenced to heavy fines in two civil suits, all of which he considers politically orchestrated against him by the Democrats of incumbent Joe Biden, whom he would face again in the presidential election in November
