French actor Gerard Depardieu left the police station on Monday where he was questioned for more than eight hours in connection with two allegations of sexual assault allegedly committed in 2014 and 2021, announced his lawyer, Christian de Saint-Palais, reiterating that the actor defends his innocence, notes the source quoted by EFE and AFP.

He said the 75-year-old actor had left the police station, but declined to say whether he would have to return in the coming days. According to Reuters, citing police sources, the actor was released without being charged.

Initial news. The French actor was called to the police headquarters to be placed in preventive detention following accusations of sexual assault, reports the BBC.

The actor faces two separate charges of sexual assault. A woman claims she was assaulted while filming Le Magicien et les Siamois in March 2014, when she was 24, while a set designer accuses the actor of sexual assault during filming in 2021.

Depardieu has yet to comment on the case, but has previously denied other allegations of sexual assault. In an open letter published last year, he said he had “never, ever, abused a woman”.

The woman involved in the 2021 incident claims the assault took place on the set of The Green Shutters, which was released the following year. According to the scenographer’s lawyer, quoted by BFMTV, Depardieu touched the woman’s body and breasts. “She felt completely helpless, unable to escape this trap,” the lawyer said.

“We have no information to pass on or confirm until we have assessed possible charges and directions to follow,” prosecutors in Paris told the BBC.

The French actor is not the first accused of sexual assault. In Spain, Ruth Baza, journalist and writer, filed a police complaint at the end of last year claiming that she was raped in October 1995.

Another sexual assault complaint, filed by actress Hélène Darras for acts dating back to 2007, was recently dismissed on the grounds that the acts were time-barred.

The French actor was also accused by 13 women, in April 2023, of having sexually assaulted them. Gerard Depardieu was indicted in December 2020 for rape and sexual assault, following a complaint by actress Charlotte Arnould, who alleged two rapes at the actor’s Paris home in August 2018.
