A German officer in charge of Bundeswehr equipment was giving secret information to the Russians. Now he was sent to court

In Dusseldorf, the trial opens on Monday in which a German officer is accused of having provided information to a Russian intelligence service, reports dpa.

The accused, who holds the rank of captain, worked at the Bundeswehr’s Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Support Services (BAAINBw), based in Koblenz.

The office is responsible for equipping the German army with weapons and equipment, as well as the development, testing and acquisition of military technologies, reports Agerpres.

The man is accused that, starting from May 2023, he offered to cooperate with the Russian consulate general in Bonn and the Russian embassy in Berlin on several occasions and on his own initiative.

Prosecutors say that the defendant Thomas H. handed over information with the intention that it be used by the Russian services. There is no indication that he received money in return.

No details were disclosed as to what information may have been transmitted.

The federal police arrested the captain in August 2023 in Koblenz, and the prosecutor’s office indicted him in March.

Germany is one of the major suppliers of arms to Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion, and the state’s security institutions say they have intensified their efforts to combat espionage by the Russian services.
