A Ukrainian company announces that it has developed an invisible submarine, Kronos, which could change the rules of the game in the current war between Russia and Ukraine, reports Interesting Engineering.

Highland Systems, based in the United Arab Emirates, presented the hydrodynamic hull submarine for the first time at the 2023 Naval Defense and Maritime Security Exhibition (NAVDEX) in Abu Dhabi.

Alexander Kuznetov, founder of Highland Systems, said the submarine was originally built for two main purposes – to transport workers for underwater repairs and to serve the luxury travel needs of the super-rich.

However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine forced Kuznetov and his team to redesign the submarine for military operations.

According to the manufacturers, the submarine has a steel hull covered with a composite material to give it a reduced radar signature.

Highland Systems says the submarine can comfortably accommodate 10 passengers and is also suitable for commercial and rescue operations.

Kronos can reach a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour on water and can operate underwater at speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour. Its working depth is up to 100 meters, but it can reach a maximum critical depth of 250 meters.

The submarine can run on diesel or batteries. Once fully charged, it can work for 18 hours with only batteries. The generator can make it work for 36 hours, which gives it a total of 54 hours of operation in hybrid mode.

It is also claimed that it has an operational autonomy of 1,000 kilometers and can be operated remotely.

However, the most important feature, according to Highland Systems, which they also claim is a world first, is its ability to perform an instant 180-degree turn at top speed.

Kronos’ mantle-beam shape results in a much more agile vehicle than the classic cigar-shaped underwater submarines used around the world, according to the makers.

The electric motor and the coating that absorbs the sonar waves turns it into an invisible and dangerous craft, according to Highland Systems.

In addition to launching torpedoes, it can approach undetected slow-moving or anchored enemy ships to attach magnetic mines which can then be detonated from a safe distance.

Kronos can operate in waters up to 15 meters deep, and its maximum speed makes it a feared vessel these days.

It can also carry six Black Scorpion torpedoes, which are being developed by weapons maker Leonardo, according to a report by Fast Company.

In the ongoing war, Ukraine has used a lot of aerial and ground drones. Kronos, if introduced by the Ukrainian armed forces, could prove to be a nightmare for Russian ships and submarines.
