The Republic of Moldova is taking certain steps towards integration into the European Union, an aspect reinforced by the Minister of Justice, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, who was on a working visit to Romania, on April 25-26.

The Republic of Moldova applied for EU membership in March 2022 and was granted candidate country status in June 2022. In December 2023, EU leaders decided to open accession negotiations. On Thursday, April 25, during the meeting with the counterpart from Bucharest, Alina Gorghiu, the official from Chisinau expressed his gratitude to our country, in terms of the support offered for European integration.

The topic “Republic of Moldova and the EU” inevitably brings into focus the discussion about Transnistria, the territory illegally occupied by Russian troops. For three decades, the Republic of Moldova has been facing this “thorn”. Newspapers.com spoke with the political scientist Andrei Țăranu about this problem, which seems far from being solved.

In the opinion of the SNSPA professor, the administration from Chisinau should have given up Transnistria a long time ago, from a formal point of view.

“This is an internal matter for those from the Republic of Moldova. Strictly as a personal opinion, this matter should have been resolved for a long time, that is, the abandonment of Transnistria. Probably, it would collapse on its own and disappear, then become an irrelevant topic. Transnistria was created by Russia precisely to keep control over the former Soviet republic – see also the example of Nagorno Karabah (Azerbaijan). Why the Republic of Moldova has been clinging to this territory for so long, since ’92, is unclear to me”, commented the political scientist.

“Society in the Republic of Moldova is becoming more homogeneous, against Russia”

Last year, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova gave a historic vote, passing the Romanian language in the Constitution, instead of the Moldovan language – a creation of the power from Moscow. The parliamentarians’ decision represents an accentuation of “anti-Russian” feelings on the part of Moldovans, Andrei Țăranu explained.

“This happens after the outbreak of the war, when pro-Russianism, especially among the Ukrainian population, turns into a kind of anti-Russianism. In the Republic of Moldova there is a large Russian-speaking population, but not all Russian-speakers are Russian. Many of them are Ukrainians and use Russian to communicate with the population of the Republic of Moldova. When their country, Ukraine, was attacked, they obviously began to develop relations against Russians, including the Russian language. Thus, they switched to the Romanian language as the official language and to the Ukrainian language, as a horizontal language, between them.

There was another such moment, in 2004-2005, when the Romanian language was also introduced as the official language, only for the communists to come to power, to change again to the Moldovan language and, in addition, to the Russian language. Then there were many tensions in the Moldovan society, the movement of 2009, which showed how divided this society is. Following the war in Ukraine, this division no longer occurred. Society in the Republic of Moldova is becoming more homogeneous, against Russia”, the political scientist also pointed out.

Until now, Maia Sandu has repeatedly called for the demilitarization of Transnistria, but in vain, because the pro-Russian territory is “self-governing”, although it is a state that almost no one recognizes.
