“It is not too late for Ukraine to win” the war against Russia, provided the West keeps its promises to supply more weapons, the head of NATO said on Thursday, according to AFP.

“In recent months, NATO allies have not provided the support” they had promised, Jens Stoltenberg lamented in a speech at an awards ceremony in Berlin on transatlantic ties.

“But it is not too late for Ukraine to win, because stronger support is on the way,” added the Alliance Secretary General.

“It is now our responsibility to turn (recent Western) commitments into real arms and ammunition deliveries, and to do so quickly,” he added.

Last Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged NATO to deliver weapons as quickly as possible to Ukraine, which “cannot wait any longer” in the face of Russian pressure. Allies have promised to increase their support.

Ukraine has suffered setbacks on the battlefield, in part because of its allies’ inability to follow through on aid promises, while a bill to increase US support has long been stalled by political wrangling.

Attack on China

However, Stoltenberg welcomed the approval by Congress of a vast US military assistance plan for Ukraine worth more than $60 billion, as well as similar commitments made by other countries, including Britain, Germany and the Netherlands.

Stoltenberg also attacked China, accusing it of “supporting Russia’s war economy” by sharing cutting-edge technology that can be used to make missiles, tanks and planes.

“China says it wants good relations with the West. At the same time, Beijing continues to fuel Europe’s largest armed conflict since World War II,” he said.
