Michelin has been in Romania for 22 years, with approximately 4,500 employees

The Michelin company has been present in our country for more than 22 years, with over 4,400 employees and three factories in Romania, two in Zalău and one in Florești, and since 2005, Romania has become the regional center for the commercial operations of the French company. serving countries such as Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.

The recent decision to relocate truck tire production from the factory in Olsztyn, Poland to production facilities in Romania, Spain and Italy, is part of a wider strategy to optimize costs and streamline production.

Although the Olsztyn plant will cease truck tire activity at the end of 2024, Michelin will maintain its other operations in Poland, including the passenger and commercial vehicle tire plant, as well as agricultural tire production.

“The factories in Aranda (nr. Spain), Alessandria (nr. Italy) and Zalău will use their available capacity and will take over the market’s requirements.

These transfers will allow balancing the production capacity of truck tires in factories in Europe, which will be able to produce the volumes needed by the market in the coming years”, said Simona Lupică, PR Manager Michelin Central Europe & Central Asia, for Agerpres.

More than 400 workers affected

Following the relocation of truck tire production from Olsztyn to Romania, approximately 430 workers will be out of a job, but Michelin officials said there is no plan to lay them off, rather to transfer them to a new position , the factory in Olsztyn being a factory with multiple activities that require personnel.

Piotr Staszałek stated that “the market is flooded with cheaper tires from the Far East, and therefore our factory has decided to stop production of truck tires.”
