State pays $138.7 million in damages to more than 100 victims of Larry Nassar

These accusations should have been taken seriously from the beginning. While these settlements will not undo the harm done by Nassar, our hope is that they will help victims get the help they need to continue to heal“, said Acting Attorney General Benjamin Mizer.

Nassar, the doctor for American Olympic gymnasts for 18 years, was sentenced in 2017 by a federal jury to 60 years in prison on charges of possession of child sexual abuse material. The following year, Nassar received additional sentences of up to 175 years and 125 years, respectively, in two other sentences handed down by courts in Michigan for molesting gymnasts under his care.

Olympic champions Simone Biles and McKayla Maroney were among the victims who publicly criticized the FBI’s handling of the investigation.

The settlement resolved 139 separate complaints, the Justice Department said. The women accused the FBI of not acting on evidence received in 2015, allowing Nassar to continue abusing young women and girls until his indictment in 2016, Agerpres notes.

One of his victims called Nassar “the scariest monster.”
