North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s powerful sister, Kim Yo Jong, said the country will continue to build an overwhelming, strongest military power to protect its sovereignty and regional peace, the North’s news agency reported on Wednesday. Korean KCNA, according to Reuters.
Kim said a series of military exercises by the US military in the region this year, starting with live-fire drills with “South Korean puppet military gangsters”, are driving the regional security environment into dangerous turmoil.
“We will continue to build an overwhelming and strongest military power to protect our sovereignty, security and regional peace,” she said, quoted by KCNA.
The US and South Korean militaries have held a series of exercises of greater scale and intensity in recent months, under a pledge by the leaders of the two countries to improve military readiness against North Korea’s military threats.
About 100 warplanes conducted two weeks of aerial exercises this month, according to the South Korean military.
North Korea says that the US military exercises are preparations for a nuclear war against it. Washington and Seoul say the exercises are defensive in nature and are conducted regularly to maintain readiness.
