Israel’s attacks in Syria are “destined to fuel the conflict” in the region, the Russian ambassador to the UN denounced on Tuesday, at a meeting of the Security Council convened after a raid attributed to Israel against the Iranian consulate in Damascus, reports AF, taken over by Agerpres.

“We believe that such aggressive actions by Israel are intended to fuel the conflict even more. They are totally unacceptable and must stop,” said Vassili Nebenzia, denouncing “a flagrant violation” of Syria’s territorial sovereignty.

Referring to the raid attributed to Israel against the Iranian consulate, Vassili Nebenzia, who forwarded Tehran’s request for this Council meeting to take place, reiterated the condemnation “in the strongest terms” previously expressed by Russia.

“Such an act, a deliberate act, is obvious: a response to international pressure by provoking the escalation of the conflict and continuing to kill Palestinians for political calculations”, denounced the Algerian ambassador Amar Bendjama, accusing Israel in turn of seeking to “train the entire region in conflict”.

The majority of Council members condemned the attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, emphasizing the inviolability of diplomatic institutions, but without mentioning Israel.

The raid attributed to Israel targeted the building near the Iranian embassy on Monday, killing at least 13 people, including seven Iranian soldiers. Iran vowed on Tuesday to retaliate.
