Drug use is already a national problem, debated by the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT). However, children, teenagers and young people in Romania are daily “tempted” to consume prohibited substances, a sign that the methods of distribution are diversifying day by day.

Recently, an ecstasy pill generically called “Donkey Kong” entered the “drug market” in Romania (the active substance -methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine-MDMA) from the amphetamine family) which is wreaking havoc among young people. According to the Romanian Police, the killer pill “Donkey Kong” would have reached the consumers in Vaslui, along with other high-risk drugs.

“From the research carried out, it emerged that, between March 2022 and April 2024, they would have repeatedly procured, possessed, handled and sold different amounts of cannabis, ecstasy tablets, crystals (3CMC) and other ethnobotanicals, to consumers in Vaslui County , with amounts between 80 and 500 lei”, DIICOT transmitted. Six people were involved in the distribution of these drugs. Four ended up preventively behind bars, and the other two are being investigated under judicial control.

Although public warnings have been issued at the European level regarding the appearance of the ecstasy pill “Donkey Kong”, until this moment, in our country no data have been transmitted regarding the effects of this form of drug.

Cătălin Țone, anti-drug expert, mentioned for Ziare.com that the effects of this “pill” are lethal due to the high concentration.

“For many years it has been known at European level that the orange Donkey Kong ecstasy pill is a very dangerous one because, following the seizures made by the authorities, it was found to have an increased concentration. The Belgian Early Warning System on Drugs (BEWSD) has issued a public warning that these tablets contain between 175 mg and 230 mg of MDMA per tablet, and anything over 200 mg of MDMA they defined a lethal potential.

More than 1.5 mg MDMA per kg body weight for men and 1.3 mg per kg body weight for women is too much (eg 60 kg woman x 1.3 = max. 78 mg MDMA) and can cause death by overdose” , explained Cătălin Țone, anti-drug expert.

“Children, teenagers are even more vulnerable to these substances. Their body and psyche is in full development, they do not have a complete immune system. Their brains don’t need the paralysis produced by drugs. All we adults, psychologists, authorities, doctors can do is to prevent. Justice should deal with the dealers, we with the prevention of consumption”, said Alina Oprea, a psychologist specialized in the treatment of addictions, for Ziare.com.

In addition to the narcotic effect, the side effects of ecstasy include clenching of the jaws, twitching of the eyes and muscles or convulsions.

In case of overdose, in the first threshold, the body temperature rises suddenly and hallucinations appear.

In the following days, after the administration of overdoses of ecstasy, increased depression, inability to concentrate, sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, and a feeling of strong apathy appear. Other ecstasy tablets with lethal potential are those with the Punisher and Tesla logos,” the above-mentioned anti-drug expert emphasized for ziare.com.
