The Iranian ambassador said the response would be harsh. The diplomat also claimed that between five and seven people were killed during the attack, according to Sky News.

Iran’s Arabic-language state television Al-Alam and Al-Mayadeen television said the strike killed Iran’s military adviser, General Ali Reza Zahedi. General Zahdi led the elite Quds Force in Lebanon and Syria until 2016.

Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad told the media after meeting with Iran’s ambassador, Hossein Akbari, that “several” people had been killed. The residence of the Iranian ambassador is in the consular building, located right next to the embassy in Damascus.

The Syrian army announced that its air defense intercepted “hostile targets” in the vicinity of Damascus. The Syrian army also reported that the Israeli planes targeted the consulate building from the direction of the Golan Heights, at 17.00 local time. The Israeli military has not commented on the incident.
