The statements of the mayor of Paris do not go unnoticed in Russia. Traveling to Kiev on Thursday, Anne Hidalgo delivered a firm message less than four months before the Olympics: “I want to convey to the Russian and Belarusian athletes that they are not welcome in Paris.”
The day after the publication of an article in Le Monde in which these previously unnoticed remarks were reported, the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Minister, Maria Zakharova, threatened in a message posted on Telegram to boycott French products in reaction to the statement of Ms. Hidalgo.
“We are not welcome in Moscow”
“Until now, French products have not been labeled with ‘we are not welcome in Moscow’ stickers, but I know that our supporters cannot be stopped if they make such a decision,” Zakharova said. For the spokesperson, “we have a wide range of products that can replace many of the French products”.
In her message, Zaharova also refers to the farmers’ street mobilizations since the beginning of the year. “One more statement like this and representatives of the French business world will be storming Paris City Hall after the farmers,” the Russian official added.
