  • 27 European heads of state showed, in Sibiu, unity and confidence in the future of the EU.
  • JC Juncker: “We have 300,000 directives and regulations, of which 80% are unanimously approved.”
  • Antonio Tajani: “We have to transform ourselves into national leaders, into leaders with a vision in the EU.”

May 9, 2019. Historic summit for Romania. Sibiu was, for one day, the Capital of Europe and the meeting place of the most powerful people in the Union. On Europe Day, 5 years ago, 27 European Presidents and Prime Ministers adopted the Sibiu Declaration, demonstrating unity and confidence in the future of the European Union.

The President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, chaired the meeting. The President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, and the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, were also present. Among the leaders of the member states, among others, the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, the Austrian Chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, participated.

“Member states and democratically elected leaders want to actively shape the way the European Union goes, how it works, how it develops. Personally, I am convinced that it is important to think like this and it is desirable to think like this, to ensure the efficient functioning of our community”Donald Tusk pointed out then.

Today, such a Summit would look different. A red carpet would no longer be rolled out in the context of a border war. Perhaps there would not even be so many leaders present. The discussions would be completely different, for example, about the expansion of the European Union.
