Two workers working on a construction site in Madrid have died and another is in hospital with multiple fractures after part of the building’s supporting structure collapsed on them.

Evacuating the victims was extremely difficult due to the danger of other concrete slabs coming loose from the building.

One of the concrete slabs of this resistance structure collapsed on the workers who were working on the rehabilitation of the building. A field hospital has been set up and more than 40 workers are trying to pull out people trapped under the rubble.

Rescue teams were guided by drones to search for the two workers. At the time of the collapse, they were working on the upper floors of the building. It is not yet known what caused the concrete slabs to detach. Another colleague managed to escape, but suffered several fractures.

After a few hours of searching, the other two victims were also pulled out from under the rubble, but lifeless. The building was to be transformed from an office building into an apartment block.

The police are to establish the circumstances in which the tragedy occurred and whether the safety rules were followed. Authorities say the building will most likely be demolished entirely.
