The good weather of the last weeks made the most awaited fruits take their place on the stalls. In the greenhouses, the farmers have already started to pick the first strawberries, a sign that this year we will be able to enjoy them for a longer time.
Whether we are talking about greenhouse or field strawberries, the taste and aroma are the same. What matters instead is the variety.
“The best, most aromatic and tastiest Romanian variety, which most people look for in the markets, is the Premial variety. Unfortunately, it is an endangered species, and this is because of the small tonnage that this variety produces, but mainly because of its perishability.
It is not a variety that can withstand transport”, explains Marinel Hotca, a young farmer from Halmeu.

Varieties such as “Clery”, “Jolly”, “Asia”, “Aprica” or “Thea” can now be found on most strawberry plantations in Halmeu. They are not only fruitful but also tasty varieties, the sweetest and most in demand being “Clery” or “Jolly”, according to objective-sm.
If the price of the first strawberries reaches 15 lei, the end of the season makes the producers sell their goods at less than 10 lei/kg. However, the price is much better compared to the imported strawberries we find in supermarkets.

Here, 500 grams of fruit costs 12.5 lei, i.e. 25 lei per kilogram.
“Strawberries from the open field end up being sold for less than 10 lei/kg, and we often run the risk of not getting our investment back. The world must take into account that strawberries leave us at one price, and arrive at the stalls at another price.
Big producers don’t have time to sit at the stalls and one of our big problems lies in the sales market, which is insufficient”, says Marinel.
Solariums, future investment

Although it requires a much larger investment, manufacturers have begun to turn their attention more and more to solariums. The capricious weather of recent years has endangered their crops more than once, and many are no longer willing to take risks.
For example, for an area of 50 acres of strawberries in solariums, the investment can amount to 35,000 euros.
