A 23-year-old Romanian man was found dead after he got stuck in a container for used clothes in the town of Canonica d’Adda, in the province of Bergamo in Lombardy.

The young man’s name was Constantin Antonie and he was a resident of Fara Gera d’Adda, where he lived with some relatives, just a few hundred meters from the scene of the tragedy, informs Prima Bergamo.

Constantin Antonie had no criminal record and was not known to the authorities, a fact that initially complicated his identification, especially since he had no identity document on him.

The unfortunate incident happened on the night of Monday, May 6, around 2:00 a.m., when the young man climbed the fence that separates an area set up for the collection and sorting of waste from a private property and headed towards a yellow container intended for collection used clothes.

Trying to get into it, he stuck his head and arms in the container, up to chest level, realizing too late that he couldn’t get out.

He could neither advance further inland nor retreat.

Despite efforts to attract attention with shouts, the isolated industrial area did not allow him to be heard.

His body was discovered about six hours later by a passer-by, who initially thought he saw carelessly discarded clothes, but later noticed they were the victim’s feet.

His discovery triggered an immediate call to emergency services.

According to the ambulance doctor who arrived at the scene, the cause of death was asphyxiation due to compression of the diaphragm.

Costantin was wearing a digital watch and had a mobile phone unloaded in his pocket, inaccessible from his locked position.

Investigations continue, and the young man’s family is expected to formally identify the body at the Bergamo hospital morgue.

The prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation file and an autopsy is expected to be ordered to clarify the circumstances of the tragic event.

Containers for collecting used clothes are usually designed with a fairly small opening at the top to prevent illegal extraction of stored items.

Some containers have internal mechanisms that prevent the extraction of stored objects. These mechanisms can be in the form of flaps or other systems that allow objects to enter but block reverse access. As the young man in this case tried to move deeper into the container or retreat, the mechanism could have worked against him.
