The first measures have appeared against the mechanism by which manufacturers reduce the weight of products, but not the price. This phenomenon is known as “shrinkflation”.

South Korea is implementing measures that force manufacturers to notify buyers that the product weighs less than originally announced. This phenomenon is known as “shrinkflation”, and those who do not obey the rules are liable to stiff fines.

In France, the Minister of Finance categorized the practice of reducing the weight of a product, without changing the price, as a “scam”.

According to a study, 93% of Romanians have noticed the phenomenon in our country as well. Romanians have noticed, for some time, the decrease in the weights of several products. But the price remains the same or even increases.

“A simple search in the online catalogs of supermarkets shows us that the transformation also exists in our stores. These wafers are no longer sold at 180g and at 160, and this cheese has 10g less than in past years,” notes Digi24.

After consumer revolts, measures were taken abroad against the phenomenon of shrinkflation. Manufacturers are required to specify on the label whether their product has shrunk. For example, in South Korea, manufacturers who do not comply with this rule risk large fines between 3,000 and attention, 7,500 dollars.

In France, traders are required to notify their customers that their product has undergone changes in terms of quantity. In Romania, the authorities neglect this subject. According to the law, if the manufacturer puts the correct amount on the packaging, he can modify the product in any way he wants.

“We must always check and be very careful what we buy, not just at these times. We must always inform ourselves and it is the consumer’s obligation to inform himself. Even in Hungary, a draft law against the shrinkflation phenomenon is being prepared,” economics specialists told DIGI24.
