Chinese state media reported that 48 people have been confirmed dead so far after a section of highway collapsed in Guangdong province on Wednesday. Another 30 people were hospitalized with injuries of varying severity. Witnesses told reporters that they heard a noise as a section of the highway collapsed. More than 20 cars fell into the void, some of them subsequently exploding. The search operation for possible survivors was made difficult by rains and landslides at the site of the incident. This was the rainiest month of April recorded in Guangdong province since measurements began, and in the region where the incident took place, the amount of rain that fell was four times higher than in the same period last year.)/opopescu/lalexandrescu
