Easter egg prices 2024

Price of eggs near Easter. The offer of eggs is sufficient and at reasonable prices during this Easter period, even if Romanians consume 50% more than in a normal month, announced the president of the Romanian Poultry Breeders’ Union (UCPR), Ilie Van.

Ilie Van declared today, Thursday – May 2, that there are enough eggs on the market for Easter and at reasonable prices. According to him, sales are 50% higher than in a normal month. “If a Romanian eats an average of 20 eggs per month, now the consumption increases to 30 eggs, and this is provided 100% from domestic production. The eggs are healthy, high-quality and fresh,” said Ilie Van, quoted by Agerpres.

High demand for used Easter eggs

According to Ilie Van, during this period the price of eggs in Romania is 15.4% lower at the farm gate, compared to the same period last year and by 17-18% compared to the European average.

“Prices are falling. Compared to last year, the price of eggs is 15.4% lower at the farm gate. We receive weekly prices from the EU Price Observatory, and compared to last year, i.e. the week before Easter, the price is 15.4% lower at the farm gate. The price is 184.3 euros/100 kg of eggs, and this means around 55-57 money per egg at the farm gate. We are talking about M+L category eggs, packed in 30-piece formwork, because this is followed and monitored at European level, but if you have 10 eggs or 6 eggs in the casserole, the price is a little higher. At the European level, at the farm gate, the price is 220 euros/100 kg of eggs, respectively 68-70 bani. So the price of eggs in Romania is 17-18% lower than the European average”, added the representative of the Romanian poultry industry.

Regarding the price of organic eggs, at European level it is currently 411 euros/100 kg, i.e. 1.27 lei/egg at the farm gate, while in Romania, organic eggs are 10% cheaper.

Increase in consumption of eggs, during the Easter Holidays

White eggs, more sought after because they can be dyed more easily

In Romania, the most consumed and best-selling eggs are the red-shelled ones, even if white-shelled eggs are also sought after during this period because they dye better. “Now the offer from the farmer’s yard also appears on the market, which is important, although the chickens from the farmer’s yard have decreased. Lately, more and more people are turning to modern networks, but there are still enough eggs on the market from peasant households. So there is a sufficient supply of eggs for these holidays. It must be remembered that there are also intra-community exchanges without discussion, because we also have farmers who have contracts and take eggs abroad, but the degree of self-sufficiency is 104%”, explained the UCPR president.

Van specified that the ready-dyed eggs for Easter have already appeared on sale in supermarkets, but they come more from intra-community exchanges, from Austria or Germany, where housewives don’t have much time to dye eggs. “These ready-dyed eggs are not acceptable here. Maybe with time ours will do it too, but for now the Romanian farmers don’t do something like that, because they found that they don’t have access”, he said.

In Romania, the total production of eggs is around 5 – 5.5 billion eggs per year, and the poultry industry produces about half of this supply, namely 2.5 – 2.7 billion eggs annually. According to UCPR data, out of the 219 poultry holdings at national level, 180 are UCPR members, and a holding can have several farms, either for raising chickens or for raising laying hens.
