A yellow weather warning of thunderstorms has been put in place by the Met Office for parts of the UK. The alert will be in place from 8pm today until 8am Thursday
Thunderstorms are set to hit parts of the UK from 8pm today with a yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office.
Heavy rain is expected to cause issues for those traveling and using public transport and could lead to some flooding, the weather experts have said. The weather alert is in place until 8am Thursday morning and covers large parts of Wales, London and the South East and Herefordshire.
A Met Office spokesman said: “Spells of heavy rain are expected this evening and overnight. In some places, most likely over northern and eastern parts of the warning area, there is a chance that rain will be accompanied by thunderstorms and frequent lightning. 20 to 40 mm of rain is expected to fall quite widely with 50 mm possible in a few places. In some places much of this rain may fall over a two or three hour period.”
They added that people should expect spray and sudden flooding, leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services. The Met also added that there is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost and homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds .
