With each withdrawal from the electoral race, AUR members reveal a harsh reality: once the veneer of demagogic patriotism is peeled back, a fragile skeleton is left behind, troubled by disappointment and frustration. Elena Năstăsoiu and the 18 candidates who followed her example can no longer ignore the reprehensible facts and manipulations behind the party curtain. GOLD, once seen as a bundle of promises for genuine change, is now turning into a real tale of disillusionment.

Elena Năstăsoiu, the AUR candidate for Buzău City Hall, announced on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday that she withdrew from the electoral race, accusing “reprehensible facts that raise many question marks“. Along with her, 18 of the 29 candidates for the Buzău Local Council withdrew their candidacies.

Elena Năstăsoiu arrived at the headquarters of the Municipal Electoral Office at 11:50, 10 minutes before the deadline for submitting candidacies, and withdrew from all electoral races.

At the exit, Elena Năstăsoiu made a series of statements in which she accused the party’s leadership of interference in the municipal organization of AUR Buzău and of the intervention in compiling the lists of candidates for the City Council and the County Council.

“Elena Năstăsoiu: GOLD is the biggest poison for the Romanian electorate. I decided to withdraw from the AUR, as a candidate for Buzău City Hall, the City Council and from the AUR European Parliament. Lately, in AUR Buzău there have been reprehensible acts that raise many question marks. For more than a year, I have been leading a team of people who, through work, dedication and involvement, have shown Buzău that AUR can be a viable alternative, but an alternative supported by these people who have tried professionally, personally and socially. I consciously chose to sacrifice my child’s time, my heart, my health and my money. A lot of money. For the AUR cause, a cause that I thought was for Romanians and Romania, but I was wrong. I entered AUR out of patriotism, which can be proven by the fact that in 2020, when I was asked to run for Parliament, I refused. The AUR central leadership asked me to lead the AUR in the municipality of Buzău, promising me that they would not interfere in the life of the local organization if it tried electorally and politically. And yes, we tried because we took over the organization with 29 members last year in March 2023 and today we are around 200 dues members and thousands of supporters and supporters. After a titanic work, in which we showed the strength of the AUR municipal team, the county leadership, supported by the central one from Bucharest, trampled on our proposals for the City Council and the County Council“, said Elena Năstăsiu.

She claims that nothing that was discussed with the party leadership was respected. “The announced criteria were very pompous, but nothing was respected. No meritocracy, no transparency, no commitment, no involvement. We’ve had people put on the list who haven’t been seen in our actions. We believed that in proportion to our work, dedication and results, we would have people on the County Council list. There was no such thing. As a leader, I cannot move forward without the people who made the municipal organization perform. I cannot accept humiliation and disrespect. I have a moral duty to cry out against the injustice, the lies and the habit of the AUR decision makers to use people. People don’t matter, it seems. Only their petty interests of those running AUR matter. I am not afraid to speak up for honesty and truth. I see that AUR President George Simion is announcing a new campaign for children. Don’t forget, George Simion, that displayed patriotism is an indecency!“, said the former AUR candidate for the Buzau City Hall.

Năstăsoiu also conveyed that AUR is now “the biggest poison for the Romanian electorate” and that loyal people are pushed aside and replaced by those from other parties and the financially powerful. “AUR, as it is now, is the biggest poison for the Romanian electorate, because it is a real machine for manufacturing lies and vain hopes. All are promised positions if you work, sacrifice and give. That is why the good people worked, sacrificed and gave and were marginalized, because the call of AUR was for the financially powerful and those of other parties. And loyal people are cast aside. Now it is becoming more and more clear why AUR refuses the constitution, statutory, moreover, of local and county organizations“, Professor Năstăsoiu also said.

On Tuesday evening, along with Elena Năstăsoiu, 18 of the 29 people on the list of local councilors withdrew their candidacies.

The model of future evolution

Following the multiple withdrawals from the electoral race and the bitter revelations of those who are now leaving the ranks of AUR, a disturbing picture of the party is emerging. This series of events can be seen as an indicator of the evolution that AUR will go through in the near future.

Accepting backbenchers and petty interests at the expense of the party’s core values ​​comes at a huge price, and AUR is starting to pay it now. Instead of being a coherent political force based on clear principles and supported by dedicated members, the AUR is becoming increasingly vulnerable to the pressures and divergent interests of individuals who do not really share the party’s original vision.

While party leaders strive to maintain an image of unity and cohesion, the reality behind the curtain is becoming increasingly apparent. The lack of transparency and commitment to the core members of the party is beginning to leave deep traces in its internal structure.

Despite efforts to maintain its public image and promote an image of strength and confidence, AUR is now being called into question. Its path to a relevant and genuine political force is sabotaged by its internal decisions and maneuvers, which undermine the trust and credibility that party members and sympathizers placed upon it with its initial enthusiasm.
