Elon Musk has shut down Tesla’s Supercharger division, fired two executives and laid off hundreds of other employees as the electric carmaker continues its restructuring amid a sharp decline in the electric vehicle market, the FT writes.

Musk announced internally on Monday that the head of the Supercharger group, Rebecca Tinucci, and Daniel Ho, the head of new products, will be leaving with their entire team. About 500 people were part of the supercharger group, the memo said.

Tesla’s supercharger system is among the largest charging networks in the world and has been one of the reasons the company has enjoyed such a big lead over rival automakers for so long. While top-loading operations will continue, the move raises questions about the future of the top-loading business.

The entire public policy unit will also be disbanded following the departure of its leader, Rohan Patel, in mid-April.

“Hopefully, these actions make it clear that we must be absolutely steadfast in reducing headcount and costs,” Musk wrote in the memo, which was first reported by The Information. “While some of the enforcement staff take this seriously, most still do not.”

Any director “who retains more than three people who clearly do not pass the excellent, necessary and trustworthy test” should resign, he added.
