Endangered by a pot left on the fire

Last night, a pot of food left on the fire endangered the residents of a block of flats on Gheorghe Filipescu Street, in the municipality of Botoșani. The alarm was raised by neighbors who saw smoke coming from the apartment on the first floor.

Two crews belonging Botoșani Fire Department arrived, in the shortest time, on the scene, with a water and foam extinguishing vehicle, one for extrication. An ambulance belonging to the case also moved Botoșani County Ambulance Service.

They found that the owner was in the smoke-filled apartment and evacuated him. The 73-year-old man did not suffer as a result of this incident. Firefighters ventilated the space and made sure the hazard was removed.

Following some simple rules can prevent a fire caused by cooking appliances being left unattended. Therefore, the firefighters recommend:

• do not leave food on fire, unattended;
• after you have finished cooking make sure you have turned off the oven, the stove and the cylinder;
• clean and remove grease deposits and food residues from stoves, hobs and grills in the kitchen, as they can catch fire easily;
• do not leave children alone in the kitchen. Keep matches and lighters out of reach and place a safety device on the oven door.

If oil or the contents of a pan catch fire:

• turn off the gas/electric power to the stove/cooker the pan is on (if you can safely do so) and let it cool;
• do not throw the pan on the floor or kitchen furniture and do not pour water over it;
• extinguish pans that are on fire by covering them with a lid or placing a wet towel over them.

Limiting the supply of oxygen necessary for combustion leads to extinguishing the fire.
