Orthodox Christians celebrate today, April 28, the Savior’s entry into Jerusalem, in the last week of His earthly life. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Passion Week, a period of great significance in the Christian calendar. About 1.8 million Romanians are celebrating their name day today.
According to the Florii tradition, the faithful take willow branches to the church, which are consecrated and then placed at the icons, at the fruit trees to help them bear fruit or at the door of the house so that the house is protected all year round.
For Romanians, the willow replaces the olive and palm branches with which the Savior was greeted by Christians as a true king.
It is said that fish eaten on Palm Sunday has healing powers and whoever eats it will be cured of any disease.
Also on Florii, Orthodox believers go to church to receive Holy Communion.
At the end of the service, the priests distribute the holy willow branches, which are placed at the icons in the house. They are said to have healing powers.
