The earthquake occurred near the coastal area, on Saturday, at 2:21 local time (Friday, 21:21, Romanian time), at a depth of 24.9 kilometers.

According to a journalist from France-Presse, residents of the capital Taipei were alerted by phone about the risks related to the new earthquake.

Taiwan was hit by more than 1,000 aftershocks after the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that hit Hualien district earlier this month and left 17 dead, reports Agerpres, citing Reuters and France-Presse.

Located at the intersection of two tectonic plates, Taiwan is frequently hit by earthquakes. In 2016, over 100 people lost their lives in an earthquake in the south of the island. Earlier, in 1999, more than 2,000 Taiwanese died in a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in the central part of the island.
