We know about Saint Basil the Martyr that he lived during the time of Emperor Licinius and was bishop of Amasia. The emperor was a married man, but he fell in love with one of his wife’s maids, the maiden Glafira.

Because she feared God, Glafira did not accept the relationship and confessed everything to Licinius’ wife. Afterwards, the empress sent the maiden away from the imperial court at Nicomedia. This is how Glafira arrived in the fortress of Amasia, where she was received by Bishop Vasile, together with other Christians. All the money the virgin had received from the empress she gave to the church in Amasia.

When the emperor Licinius found out the whereabouts of the maid he had fallen in love with, he ordered both Saint Basil and the maiden Glafira to be brought from Amasia. However, the virgin died in the meantime, and only the bishop of Amasia was brought before the emperor. After being tortured, Saint Basil’s head was cut off, and his body was thrown into the sea, writes crestinortodox.ro.

And being a partaker of the customs and following the seats of the Apostles, you learned the work, inspired by God, to raise your gaze to the heights. For this, teaching the word of truth and with faith enduring to the point of blood, Holy Martyr Vasilevs, pray to Christ God to save our souls.

Verse: Holy Martyrs Vasilevs, pray to God for us.

Before the King of the Heavenly Powers, you stand wearing a crown, Saint Vasilevs, bearer of God, asking for grace and mercy for all those who honor you with love.

Verse: Holy Martyrs Vasilevs, pray to God for us.

You reigned over the passions of the body and trampled on the godless emperor, who commanded you to renounce the Heavenly Emperor, Blessed Vasilevs.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

As a keeper of the Divine Commandments to those who reign, the King of Glory anointed you with the divine anointing of the kingdom and adorned you with the crown of martyrdom, happy father.

And now and forever and ever.

Amen
