No survivors have been found, Alaska State Police said. The plane took off from Fairbanks International Airport in the morning. It crashed about 11 km from there and “slid down a steep hill by the river, where it caught fire”, according to Alaska State Troopers.

The Federal Aviation Administration described the plane as a Douglas C-54, but police identified it as a DC-4.

Johnson said it remains unclear what happened between takeoff and the crash, but that the control tower operator “saw a large plume of smoke.” Other information, such as the purpose and destination of the flight, is not known at this time.

A woman said she immediately saw thick smoke shortly after the plane crashed. She said their pilot was sent to check the coordinates of the crash.

“I was only minutes away from landing in Fairbanks when I saw the smoke and flames. It was right on the river. It must have happened when I passed it.”Matherne told USA TODAY.

The plane has room for a flight crew of three and offers standard seating for 44 passengers, with a maximum of 86 seats, according to Airliners.net, a community of aviation photography enthusiasts, according to the source cited.
