The Minister of Justice, Alina Gorghiu, said that a dangerous fugitive was brought into the country today. This is Kumarasamy Navaneethan, a Sri Lankan national who is on the most wanted criminals list.

After 33 years of searching, a dangerous fugitive, Kumarasamy Navaneethan, a Sri Lankan citizen, was brought into the country following a successful operation between the Romanian and German police. Caught in Germany, he was picked up by an escort and taken to the Rahova Penitentiary. The Minister of Justice, Alina Gorghiu, emphasized the importance of international collaboration in such cases, declaring that no one is above the law and that all fugitives will be brought to justice.

Kumarasamy Navaneethan, 52 years old, was found in the town of Moers, Germany, at the beginning of January, following an exchange of information between the Romanian and German authorities. The man was wanted for committing a crime in 1991, when he killed a foreign citizen and threw him into Lac Morii, being later sentenced to 19 years in prison. The capture operation was possible thanks to the efficient cooperation between the Siren Bureaus in Romania and Germany, demonstrating the importance of international solidarity in combating cross-border crime.

The IGPR states in a press release: “In fact, in December 1991, the man killed a foreign citizen, after which he tied and wrapped him in the carpet from his home, located in Bucharest, and transported him to the Crângaşi district, throwing him in Lac Morii. For the act committed, the person in question was sentenced to 19 years in prison”. On October 14, 2013, the Romanian Siren Bureau introduced an alert in the Schengen Information System on the name of the man, a Sri Lankan citizen, requesting his arrest for extradition, based on a European arrest warrant issued by the Bucharest Court, for committing the crime of murder . The quoted source also shows that: “During October 13, 2023 – January 3, 2024, since there was information that the person was on the territory of Germany, the Romanian Siren Bureau exchanged data and information with the German Siren Bureau, in order to detect the person in question “.

“Kumarasamy Navaneethan is a Sri Lankan citizen, who is on the list of most wanted criminals. He was sentenced to 19 years in prison for committing a murder in 1991, in Bucharest. He managed to flee the country and hide for many years.

As a result of a good collaboration between the Romanian and German police, he was caught in Germany. And a short time ago he was picked up by an escort from the ANP to be taken to the Rahova Penitentiary.

All fugitives remember: no one is above the law. And, in the end, they will serve the sentence in a penitentiary in the country”, said Alina Gorghiu.
