A cargo plane crashed in Alaska on Tuesday. The two people who were on board probably died, the American authorities announced.

The accident took place around 10 o’clock in the morning near the airport in Fairbanks, a city in the center of this state located in the extreme northwest of the American continent, the Alaska police said in a statement.

The plane had “two people on board” and crashed “in the Tanana River”, less than ten minutes after takeoff.

“The plane fell on a steep hill on the bank of the river, where it caught fire. No survivors were found,” the police said.

A photo of the crash provided by authorities shows burning trees on the edge of an ice-covered river, in the middle of which the wreckage of the plane is barely discernible.

The plane was a Douglas DC-4. Created during the Second World War, this model has not been produced for more than thirty years and is currently used mainly for the transport of goods.

The plane was flying to transport fuel, the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed. This government agency has opened an investigation.
