Motorola has officially announced the Edge 50 Pro in India, its first premium smartphone for the year 2024, which could very soon reach the European market as well. This is not a flagship, but rather a high-end mid-range model, but equipped with many top components and a powerful camera system, at an impressively affordable price for what it offers.

Edge 50 Pro could be a phone without competition in the premium mid-range area in 2024

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro has all the features we see from flagships, except one. Instead of a top chipset, we have a mid-range one: the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, a high-performance model in its range, which approaches the 8 series in some respects. In fact, it can run some AI functions locally, although not at the same level of performance as a top-of-the-line one.

There are two hardware configurations, with 8GB of RAM or 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage standard on both. The internal battery has a capacity of 4,500 mAh and comes with 125W wired and 50W wireless charging, and its construction ensures perfect isolation against water and dust to the IP68 standard.

Even the Motorola Edge 50 Pro’s screen is a top one, based on a 6.7″ panel with a resolution of 1200p at 144 Hz, based on pOLED technology. It is capable of 2,000 nits of brightness and comes with Pantone certification for color rendering, being the first smartphone to benefit from it.

The only other aspect besides the processor where we see some slight compromises on the Motorola Edge 50 Pro could be the camera system. If the main one, of 50 megapixels with aperture f/1.4 and optical stabilization could offer flagship performance, the secondary ones, although they offer useful perspectives, such as ultrawide and 3x zoom, they use sensors of 13 and 10 megapixels, respectively. An advantage would be that on the ultrawide camera we also have autofocus, so there is a macro mode on it, without a dedicated camera. And the front camera could be a high-quality one, having a resolution of 50 megapixels and automatic focus.

Motorola boasts of AI features on this model

Motorola boasts of its software capabilities like AI Photo Enhancement Engine for better processed images with the help of artificial intelligence, but also AI integration in HelloUX for generating AI wallpapers. This latter function seems to be the standard one in Android 14, the processing of which is done on Google’s servers. At the same time, this is the first phone with Smart Connect from Motorola, functions that allow integration with other devices such as tablets or PCs from Motorola and Lenovo. It looks like these capabilities could complement or replace Ready For functionality.

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro launches in India on April 9 at the price of 31,999 rupees, equivalent to 350 euros in the base variant 8+128GB and 35,999 rupees for 12+256GB, which is about 400 euros. These prices are similar to what we see on Samsung’s Galaxy A series, but the phone’s capabilities seem much higher. Of course, these prices are valid for India. It is not yet clear how much this device will cost once it arrives in Europe and local import taxes are applied. Most likely, the price could increase by at least 100 euros.
