Chicken breast reached the first place in the top of poultry meat sales, after the consumption went through a transformation, following the trend in Western Europe, where for many years it was the “king” of the tables, outranking the leg and wings, the favorites of Romanians in past, according to George Safir, the general manager of the Safir company, which produces poultry meat in Vaslui county.

“When we started slaughtering birds and producing poultry meat, in Romania there was a trend diametrically opposite to what was happening in Western Europe, that is, Romanians consumed a lot of leg, wing and then there was the bird breast. In the west, it was the boneless breast that was in power, and at the moment we have taken the trend from the west”, said George Safir, the general director of the Safir company.

The company has a total of seven chicken farms and produces poultry meat, prepared and semi-prepared poultry meat under the brands Deliciosul de Vaslui, Zdravăn Moldovenesc and Rasfată Românesc in Vaslui county. The business was founded in 1991 by Gheorghi Safir, George Safir’s father, who bought a mill at that time, and in 2005 decided to make poultry meat.

“The trend from Western Europe, as a consumption preference, reaches us with a gap, but it does.”

“Now we consume more breast and, in general, boneless chicken breast to the detriment of leg. But, at this moment, in Western Europe, at least in the Netherlands, from what we see, because there we have sales contracts, there is a trend to consume more boneless meat”, explained George Safir.

He believes that this trend will reach Romania again, if the rule is followed, after a few years. “Once again, the chicken thigh will come to power, and the wings, however they are, are indispensable for Romanians on the grill. The wing has not changed its place in the consumption trend.”

In HoReCa, Safir also said, boneless chicken breast and boneless thigh are mainly requested, because every manager tries to make the activity more efficient and they are done faster. “In fast food, wings are all the rage right now.”

Regarding poultry sales in general, George Safir said last year’s trend was maintained in the first quarter of 2024. “In our industry, the first quarter is not one where sales are the highest. Only from the second quarter do sales increase. May 1st is the start of the season or, better you said, when it’s quite warm outside, then it’s the start of the season, that is, the start of the barbecues, where poultry meat is consumed, because the protein from poultry meat is the cheapest. The world is tired of staying indoors and can’t wait to go outside.”
