Video calls to 112, locating with a precision of a few meters and sending files to the emergency services. The authorities want to radically change the way we ask for and receive help. However, it will take two years to implement the new system.

The video call could take the place of long explanations on the phone. According to a project of the Communications Authority, the calls would move to the Internet, with the help of 4G and 5G technology.

• Pavel Popescu, vice-president of ANCOM: We are moving from voice to total communication. The simple call of the number 112 can turn into a video at any time. It won’t be a complicated matter.
• Raed Arafat, head of DSU: A video call can be very helpful in making decisions because sometimes it tells you that the person is unconscious and if you make a video call you see that the person is conscious. You can find out more about a road accident. If you see what is happening around the accident, you know what resources to send from the beginning. In medicine, we have tested something like this and this is part of telemedicine, we have over 30,000 such transmissions per year, besides that, you will also have the video image which will be very helpful.

In case of a fire, the video call will show the firefighters how serious the situation is, as in the demonstration made by the Observer reporter.

– 112, what is your emergency?

– Hello! Smoke is coming from the roof of a building.

– Please turn on the video camera so we can see exactly what is happening.

– Immediately. There’s a little smoke up there.

– I understand. We’ll send a crew over to check it out. Thank you.

In the event of a road accident, the car can automatically call the emergency system. The 112 operator has access to images filmed by the on-board cameras, can stop the engine or unlock the doors.

• Pavel Popescu, vice-president of ANCOM: The estimate is that somewhere in one, two and a half years, we would like to have this present in Romania. We could be the pilot country that will be able to incorporate all these technologies at once and be the first country in Europe to launch this in the most advanced and correct way.

Once this project is implemented, classic calls will still be able to be used by those who do not have access to the Internet.
