The 18-year-old British skier was swept away and killed by an avalanche while on the slopes of Meiringen in the Swiss canton of Bern, and another unidentified person is still missing. Now rescue teams are searching for her through the snow.
The avalanche occurred in Meiringen on Tuesday, March 21.

Rescuers were immediately dispatched by helicopter to the mountain

The missing person’s age, gender and nationality have not been released. However, local reports say the 18-year-old was originally from England but had recently been living in Bern. The police were notified of the avalanche on Tuesday, around 4:25 p.m.

Two members of a ski trip, believed to be the aforementioned victims, were separated from the larger group when the avalanche struck, burying them both under snow, according to Bern police.

The rescue team was only able to recover one of the buried men, the 18-year-old British victim. Last night, around 7:30 p.m., the search for the second victim had to end because it was getting dark.

The search is being carried out by the Rega crew, the Swiss Alpine Rescue, the Swiss Alpine Rescue, mountain specialists and the police of the canton of Bern. Last month, a mountaineer revealed how he survived more than 20 hours buried under an avalanche as temperatures plunged to -15C.

Carluccio Sartori, 54, stunned rescuers and police officers when he was pulled from the snow alive, and even managed to hold a conversation with them. He told rescuers that an air chamber that formed the surface of the avalanche not only provided him with oxygen to breathe, but also insulated him from the cold overnight temperatures. The incredible rescue of the man from Villanova Marchesana in Rovigo, north-east Italy, took place in the famous resort of Val Badia in the South Tyrol region on January 27.

When he was pulled from the ground, his body temperature was about 24 degrees Celsius, after spending the whole night buried in the snow. His body temperature meant he was in the third and most severe stage of hypothermia. After being rushed to the San Maurizio hospital in Bolzano and admitted to intensive care, he is expected to make a full recovery, although he suffered some fractures and frostbite on his hands and feet.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Mr Sartori said that as he was buried under the snow, he tried to stay awake and not fall asleep, his will to live very strong.
