Microsoft is making subtle but important changes in the latest beta version of Windows 11 in an attempt to eliminate the common confusion users encounter when interpreting memory speed. Recently, in Windows 11 Beta 22635.570 preview, a subtle but important change was noticed in the Task Manager: memory speed is now measured in MT/s (Megatransfers per second), replacing the old standard of MHz (Megahertz).

This change in Windows 11 aims to align the memory speed indices with the specifications communicated by the manufacturers. In the past, the discrepancies between MT/s and MHz often created confusion. For example, DDR4 memory with a nominal speed of 3200 MT/s was showing in Task Manager as 1600 MHz.

This is because modern system memory uses Double Data Rate (DDR) technology, which allows two values to be transmitted per clock cycle. Thus, the frequency in MHz, which represents the number of clock cycles, is actually half the number of MT/s, representing the number of transfers.

The change implemented by Microsoft in Windows 11 comes in response to repeated questions from users who were surprised by the surprisingly low values displayed. With this update, Microsoft wants to provide a clearer and more accurate picture of hardware performance, thereby eliminating the need for further clarification and technical support in this regard.

Confusion is not new for Windows 11 users. For example, in an updated version of Windows 11 23H2, Task Manager incorrectly displayed 3200 MHz for DDR4 memory that is actually running at 3200 MT/s. Such irregularities are common, as was the case with a user on Reddit who reported speeds of 4800 MT/s and 5200 MT/s displayed simultaneously for installed DDR5 memory.

With these changes, Microsoft reinforces its commitment to providing a more consistent and intuitive user experience in Windows 11. Adapting to MT/s is proof that Microsoft is listening to user feedback and continuously improving the operating system to meet their needs and expectations them. This adaptation not only clarifies the presentation of data in Windows 11, but also helps to better understand the actual performance of the system.
