YouTube recently implemented a new codec aimed at improving the efficiency of video compression, but this change caused problems for users of older devices, including those with Samsung Galaxy phones.

Reported issues include stuttering during video playback and a significant decrease in battery life, problems seen mostly on affordable models of Galaxy phones and tablets.

At the root of this situation is the adoption of the AV1 decoder, called “libdav1d”, introduced in Android starting with the Google Play System updates distributed in March 2024. This codec, developed by the VLC team, is intended to increase the clarity of YouTube videos and reduce the amount of data needed for streaming without compromising quality, writes Sam Mobile.

Not all devices have native hardware support for AV1 decoding

However, not all devices have native hardware support for AV1 decoding, meaning many must rely on a software decoder. This involves using the CPU for video decoding, which can lead to increased battery consumption and reduced performance, especially on older or less powerful devices. As a result, users may experience playback issues, including image stuttering, even at low resolutions.

To further complicate the situation, it seems that not all apps automatically ask to use the new “dav1d” decoder after the Google Play System update. This may result in the continued use of the older “libgav1” decoder, which is not as efficient.

It is important that users check that their devices have received the latest Google Play System updates to benefit from the improvements brought by the new codec.
