Russian President Vladimir Putin has placed the Russian subsidiaries of the Italian company Ariston and the German appliance manufacturer BSH Hausgeraete under the management of JSC Gazprom Household Systems, according to a decree published on Friday.
“These measures, aimed at legitimate economic activities, are yet another proof of Russia’s contempt for international law and norms,” said a spokesman for the EU’s diplomatic service, according to Reuters.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said the government had summoned the Russian ambassador to provide clarification on the issue, adding that Rome was coordinating with Berlin and European Union officials in Brussels.
The EU stated in a statement that these steps confirmed the fact that Russia, which is waging a war in Ukraine, is “an unpredictable actor in the economic field as well and has created an arbitrary and hostile business climate towards foreign investors”.
“The European Union requests Russia to return to these measures and to seek acceptable solutions with the European companies targeted by them”, the press release states.
Ariston declared on Saturday that it was “extremely surprised” by this measure and evaluates the implications of the decree from the point of view of governance and management.
