Drug use fuels a vicious chain of devastating consequences, one of which is the spread of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) through contaminated syringes. This danger is not just a theory, but a harsh reality affecting communities around the world.

Drug use, risk factor for HIV/AIDS

Drugs are not only a social scourge, but also a factor that increases the risk of HIV transmission. By creating an environment of promiscuity and inducing risky behaviors, drug use opens the door to unsafe sexual contact with unknown or infected people. This aspect of the problem has serious consequences for public health, exacerbating the HIV epidemic and complicating efforts to combat communicable diseases.

Drug use is a major risk factor for the transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). This association is complex and has significant consequences for public and individual health.

One of the main ways drug use contributes to the spread of HIV is through the use of contaminated syringes. Injecting narcotics with non-sterile syringes and sharing them between users creates an environment conducive to the transmission of the virus. Therefore, people who get involved in injecting drug use are at increased risk of HIV infection.

Univ. Prof. Dr. Doina Azoicai explained, exclusively for DC MEDICAL, what is, in fact, the link between drug use and HIV/AIDS.

“The Human Immunodeficiency Virus can be transmitted through contaminated objects, in the case of the use of contaminated syringes, transmitted from one to another. Indirectly, the use of drugs can create conditions of promiscuity that favor sexual contacts with unknown or infected persons and then this scourge of our century, namely the use of drugs, has enormous consequences, including with regard to this issue of communicable diseases”, explained university professor. Dr. Doina Azoicai, exclusively for DC MEDICAL.

What is HIV/AIDS

HIV infects and gradually destroys a person’s immune system, making that person more vulnerable to infection and serious illness. When the HIV infection progresses to a certain stage and the immune system is severely compromised, the person is diagnosed with AIDS. AIDS is an advanced state of HIV infection, characterized by the presence of serious opportunistic infections or diseases associated with the weakening of the immune system.

HIV infection can be transmitted through contact with infected blood, genital secretions and body fluids such as semen, vaginal fluid and breast milk. The most common routes of transmission include unprotected sex, sharing contaminated syringe needles, and mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding.

Although there is still no cure for HIV/AIDS, antiretroviral treatment (ART) can slow the progression of the virus and help maintain a healthy and productive life for infected people. In addition, preventive measures, such as using condoms and avoiding sharing needles, are essential to reduce the risk of HIV transmission.
