“Sucu tried some things. He contacted me, we talked, I called him. You will see that in the near future he will rebel. He wants to claim some rights. He’s a smart boy, he’s a businessman. He will rebel against the way TV rights money is distributed.

He says “Sir, one million euros is divided according to the audience”. I told him «You are my friend and you are right. I support you, but don’t ask me to make a big fuss. We are making fun of ourselves for a few tens of thousands of euros”.

Now nothing can be done. This money is divided like this. When the next negotiation for the TV rights comes, we ask for 10 million more. That we can ask for it, that we deserve it. And those 10 million euros in addition to be distributed to the audience.

What has been divided now we cannot return. We can go to court, because the audience is the property of the club. It’s just that we agreed that the small clubs should also get money, depending on the performance. They have no money. I said, “Dane, we have to sacrifice ourselves!». He doesn’t agree. The way in which these rights are divided, that the audience is not taken into account, but only the sports performance, makes no sense! It should be a mix. The rights are for the audience, but they are divided only based on the performance in the leaderboard. They should be broken down, for the most part, by audience, based on how much of an audience you’ve generated. It’s very simple.

Last year we collected less than 1 million euros, but according to our calculations, taking into account the audience, we should have collected somewhere around 4 million euros. That money is in the pockets of other clubs, which do not generate audiences. They have no business there, from my point of view. No audience means no audience, i.e. no fans. The TV rights contract is changing!

In January, Justin Ștefan, the general secretary of the Professional Football League, spoke exclusively to Gazeta Sporturilor about the changes that will take place regarding the teams in the Super League. Romanian football will collect more money from the TV rights from the upcoming competitive season. More precisely, the sum of 36 million euros including VAT! Compared to 33.5 million euros, as it is currently.

Now the distribution is done according to a grid agreed by the officials of the League and the holder of the television rights, but from the season 2024-2025 there will be changes.

“I have always supported that the money from television rights should be shared as much as possible according to the American model, equally. At the moment we have a socialist division, equally, but only on a certain percentage. By the summer we should decide on the additional money that eAD will give”, said Justin Ștefan, the general secretary of the League.

More specifically, “from next season we have to decide how we will pay for performance as well. One of the shareholders of the company that owns the TV rights, Mr. Tomșa, insisted a lot that he wanted the audience to be taken into account. Mr. Șucu very much wants the performance in the audience area to be rewarded”, he also claimed.

The announcement is very clear: “From the next season, it will be divided according to the audience criteria. If only six clubs meet the money-sharing criteria, that million from the audience will only go to those six clubs.”
