Eurovision 2024 starts today. Romania is not participating, TVR is not broadcasting. Good thing we have thousands of employees, with high salaries, and zero audience…

--

TVR decided that Romania will not participate this year, after Theodor Andrei did not manage, last year, to obtain any point in the semi-final, registering the worst performance of our country in history.

It was all TVR’s fault, because the participating television stations in each country are responsible for choosing the songs and staging for each competitor qualified in the semifinal of the European competition.

Rather than make fun of ourselves, TVR decided that it’s better not to participate anymore and blamed “financial constraints”, after last year the television representatives left Theodor Andrei alone in front of the critics. They now claim that SRTv’s budget does not allow for the allocation of the necessary funds for Eurovision 2024, given the current year’s priorities: the Paris Summer Olympics and the ongoing re-engineering process.

“Financial constraints and the desire to represent Romania at a high level of performance are the reasons underlying the decision of the Board of Directors (CA) not to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) this year,” explained TVR.

But despite financial problems, public television has applied for a broadcast license for two new channels – TVR Sport and TVR Folklor – which, if they follow the model of TVR Info and TVR Cultural (both reintroduced to the grid by 2022), we can expect to have a rating of 0.1 and a market share, on good days, of 0.2%. This means that TikTok’s live streams also reach larger audiences.

Let’s not talk about the new shows that continue to be more and more budgeted, from grid to grid, despite the fact that the rating of TVR 1, the main station in the public trust, is also surpassed in terms of audiences by telenovelas. In the urban environment, TVR ranked only 12th in the March audience ranking, with an average of only 27,050 viewers. As an idea, Happy Channel, a station dedicated to series and telenovelas, manages to gather 3 times more audience in urban areas.
