The third day of Easter is also White Tuesday or Light Tuesday. On this day, Orthodox Christians must observe certain traditions and customs of the people, but there are also things that they must not do under any circumstances.

On the third day of Easter, respectively on White Tuesday or Bright Tuesday, people used to visit their relatives, neighbors or relatives since ancient times. These visits were called the “Passover Walk”, and the custom comes from the time when Christians walked around sharing the news that Jesus Christ had risen. The second Lamb is dried and crumbled according to a special tradition. Afterwards, it is placed in an ark on the Holy Table in the Altar and is used all year for communion with the sick or those who cannot make it to church.

Women must know that on the third day of Easter no work, no washing, no ironing and no cleaning, under any circumstances. Village housewives must give alms of pasture and red wine. Moreover, on this day memorials for those who have passed away are prohibited, services being resumed after St. Thomas Sunday.

What does the Illuminated Week symbolize?

Holy Week is the beginning of a period of celebration that ends 50 days after Easter, when Pentecost occurs. In ancient times, Baptism was performed on Easter night, and the baptized were called “enlightened”. They dressed in white clothes throughout the following week, hence the name Illuminated Week. Services during this period are held with the Royal Doors wide open, which symbolizes the open door at the tomb of the Lord Jesus Christ, but also the breaking of the veil of the Temple in Jerusalem at the time of His death.
