Expo Marathon 2024, 12th edition

The artists integrated in this edition of the project will present to the public different forms of artistic expression rendered in exhibitions of painting, sculpture, drawing, engraving, photography or installations that exploit various concepts.

The University of Art and Design from Cluj-Napoca, the Casa Matei Gallery, the University Association of UAD Cluj-Napoca and ASUAD are organizing from 9–30 May 2024 the 12th edition of “EXPO MARATHON”, the competition of individual exhibition projects of UAD students and master’s students.

The event keeps its original format and includes 16 exhibitions that can be viewed every Tuesday and Thursday between 19.00 and 22.00 at the Casa Matei Gallery.

The main purpose of the artistic events initiated through the “Expo Marathon” is to generate a launch platform for young artists and to support them in creating a dialogue with the general public.

Precisely for this reason, the public is invited to evaluate the exhibitions based on ballots (in the categories the layout of the exhibition, the quality of the concept and the quality of the works), the accumulated points designating the winners who will enjoy a documentary trip to the Venice International Biennale of Contemporary Art or financial prizes.

Also, the partners of the event will award, in turn, the preferred artists according to the specifics of the activity of the respective institutions.

From the first edition until today, more than 180 students made their artistic debut at the Expo Marathon, 35 of them benefiting from documentary trips to important international centers dedicated to contemporary art (Venice, London, Liverpool, Kassel, Lodz), over 65 having the chance to later exhibit their projects in other galleries, and over 90 obtaining prizes with financial value supported by the project budget (AFCN or Cluj-Napoca City Hall and Local Council) or by its sponsors.

Previous editions of the event have enjoyed large audiences (with an average of 400 visitors attending each opening night) and have been positively received in the artistic community, social media and the mass media.

This year, the event enjoys important partnerships with the French Institute in Cluj-Napoca, the German Cultural Center Cluj-Napoca, the Polish Institute Bucharest, Galeria Quadro Cluj-Napoca, Matca Art Space, White Cuib, Sector 1 Gallery Bucharest, Galeria Laborna Bucharest , Interart Triade Timișoara Foundation, Borderline Art Space Iași, Cosmic House Cluj-Napoca Foundation.

The events of Expo Marathon 2024 are included in the project Generation Next – Art of the future in Cluj which, following the competition organized this year at the level of our municipality, obtained non-refundable funding from the City Hall and the Cluj-Napoca Local Council.
