Romania is the champion of the European Union in terms of the number of young people who neither study nor work. Data from the European Statistics Institute Eurostat show that 19.8% of young people aged between 15 and 29 in Romania had no occupation in 2022. The proportion is almost double the European average (11.7%), Digi24.ro mentions.

Romania is in a risky situation for this reason. Not necessarily because there is a significant percentage of young people who do not work, but because this percentage has increased in the last 10 years, and the attitude of young people towards work is deeply distorted, given that most of them dream of very well-paid jobs or that they want they become rich overnight without doing anything for it.

“Young people, rather than working in the hospitality industry, for example being waiters, or working in other services that do not seem sophisticated to them, prefer not to work. Big mistake. Young people want to be millionaires and entrepreneurs overnight, but without education we witness this risk: this is the generation that will lead Romania in 15-20 years”said Daniel David.

Interestingly, the number of young people who reached voting age in the last 4 years is higher than the number of those who legally retired during this interval. About 900,000 young people reached voting age in the last 4 years.

“Among these young people, we know from 2015 and it was later confirmed that a very large number – 40% – were functionally illiterate at the age of 15. I hope that from 15 to 18, this will be corrected for many and there will be pro-democratic options. There are young people with higher education who vote for certain things, I hope for a European Romania, of education. There are also young people with secondary education who project themselves into other options – some may vote out of frustration in a not very rational way, I hope they don’t slip into extremist, anti-system attitudes, that is, on the idea of changing the system without putting anything in its place”explained Daniel David.
