The police investigating economic crime in the country carried out 78 large-scale actions to break up criminal groups and prove criminal activity in the first three months of the year and carried out 1,226 house searches.

The Romanian Police, through the Economic Crime Investigation Department, carried out controls, verifications and extensive investigations to combat economic and financial illegalities between January and March 2024. 12,650 crimes were reported and 2,957 people were investigated for crimes of an economic nature – financial, for 166 of which preventive measures have been ordered, informs a press release from the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police (IGPR) sent to AGERPRES on Monday.

For other irregularities, the police applied 1,576 contraventional sanctions, worth over 7,800,000 lei.

In the field of combating tax evasion, investigations were carried out in 9,955 criminal investigation files under own instrumentation and on the basis of 409 delegation orders from the prosecution units. As part of these activities, preventive measures were ordered against 35 people and insurance measures in the amount of over 126,000,000 lei were applied. In the field of combating fraud, investigations were carried out in 8,590 criminal investigation files under own instrumentation and on the basis of 292 delegation orders from the prosecution units.

As part of these activities, preventive measures were ordered against 45 people and insurance measures in the amount of over 37,000,000 lei were applied.

In the field of combating smuggling, investigations were carried out in 968 criminal investigation files under own instrumentation and on the basis of 123 delegation orders from the prosecution units. As part of these activities, preventive measures were ordered against 31 people and insurance measures in the amount of over 2,100,000 lei were applied. As a result of the activities carried out, almost 4,400,000 cigarettes and 3.7 tons of tobacco were seized, and 285 contraventional sanctions were applied, amounting to 2,015,600 lei, the quoted source said. In the field of protection of intellectual property rights, investigations were carried out in 3,624 criminal investigation files under own instrumentation and on the basis of 50 delegation orders from the prosecution units.

As part of these activities, preventive measures were ordered against three people and insurance measures were applied in a total amount of over 5,700,000 lei. In order to combat the irregularities committed in the field of public procurement, investigations were carried out in 1,012 criminal investigation files under own instrumentation and on the basis of 205 delegation orders from the prosecution units. As part of these activities, preventive measures were ordered against 12 people and insurance measures of over 2,800,000 lei were applied.

In the field of combating money laundering, investigations were carried out in 980 criminal investigation files under own instrumentation and on the basis of 79 delegation orders from the prosecution units. As part of these activities, preventive measures were ordered against three people and insurance measures of over 11,000,000 lei were applied.
