Kostas Passaris, the most violent prisoner in Romania, once again puts the law enforcement in the penitentiary system on fire. He was transferred with special security measures from Arad to Craiova.
Also nicknamed the “Beast from the Balkans”, Konstantinos Passaris was found guilty, in July 2003, in Romania, of murdering a cashier from a currency exchange office in Bucharest and a bodyguard. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. Passaris had been wanted by Interpol since June 2001 for murder and involvement in other violent crimes committed in Greece. He also killed 2 police officers during a prison break. For this reason, the law enforcement officers decided that Passaris is a dangerous prisoner and detained him in several maximum security prisons, reports digi24.ro.
Now, Passaris has been moved from the prison in Arad to the maximum security penitentiary in Craiova, where increased security measures have been taken in view of previous escape attempts.
Sources from the Penitentiary Administration say that Passaris is constantly looking for security breaches, but Craiova prison officials say they have prepared to keep Passaris under observation. He is monitored 24 hours a day and is taken out of the cell under very strict conditions.
Cosmin Dorobanțu, the president of the Federation of Trade Unions from the National Administration of Penitentiaries, told Digi24 that Passaris was previously imprisoned in Craiova, from where he went to Gherla, because he was a stress factor for the guards.
“He must be moved from penitentiary to penitentiary because he influences the leaders of the clans in the penitentiaries, in the sense that he can manipulate them to his advantage. He can attack his colleagues. He will also be provided with increased security measures in Craiova. These are complementary measures, to reduce the risk of an escape, a riot, some critical incidents. It greatly influences the inmates they come into contact with,” he explained.
“There were myths that he had learned all the architecture of the penitentiary, which he wanted to use to escape. That’s why he was escorted to Gherla, like in the movies,” he added.
“He has an excessively great influence on the other people. Even the inmates have come to take the side of this dangerous criminal. We do not know the ways in which he influences them. He has an excessively great power of persuasion and that is why he is moved, so as not to cause riots . It is transposed into a leader of the prisoners,” Dorobanțu said.
